Due to craziness with school, SLP's Leadership Week, and the chair selection process, this week's associate member meetings/GMM make-up will be via blog. Please contact SLP (slp@studentlife.wisc.edu) if you have any questions or concerns.

Part 1

Below is a TED Talk regarding women in leadership roles. Many of the points pertain to social behavior and norms which effect how gender and different genders engage in leadership activities and qualities associated with being a leader. Please comment twice over the next week based on feedback from other people and myself. I'm hop]ing you all find a few points you can take out of the video. Thee speaker is Sheryl Sandberg, Chief Operating Officer of Facebook.

Part 2

The second part of the make-up involves a personal goal list and setting some personal goals (not academically related). A large component of being successful revolves around the ability to maintain balance in our lives between academics, jobs, friends, personal needs, and other things we constantly try to manage and balance. One way to try and keep this balance is by thinking of things you want to do personally in order to maintain this balance. At the GMM we related these desires and forms of balance with our personal values.

Instructions:Look through the list of values listed below and select your personal top 5. Once you've selected your values come up with at least 10 things you want to do over the next 365 days to recharge your batteries or make you enjoy life. I've included part of my personal list to help you start but feel free to take this however you want! Feel free to email SLP your top 5 values and your ten+ things for your 18 List, 19 List, etc (however old you are).

11. Play golf in Madison 5 times

12. Visit Portland, Oregon

Hey student leaders! SLP is here wishing you a great and non-stressful end of your semester!

We've gotten a message from a fellow UW student who could really use some advice. In order to complete this for an event, you must comment twice giving advice to To Timid To Talk. Then, you must e-mail slp@odos.wisc.edu with a 2-3 paragraph response to this question:
Describe a time when you had to use your leadership skills within a group activity. Did it go well? Were there issues within the group?

"Hey SLP!

I have a huge group project for my class due two weeks after Thanksgiving. There are 10 people in my group, and we're not getting anywhere! We've met twice now, but no one seems to be willing to share ideas at all. When someone does say an idea, it's not very well received.

I have some really good ideas, and I really want to share them, but I'm incredibly nervous to talk in front of people I don't know very well. I'm afraid they'll think my ideas are terrible, and just shoot them down without hearing me out. Either that, or I'll just start talking and get nervous and forget what I wanted to say in the first place.

How can I get over my fear and talk to my group about my ideas with them?

Leadership Challenge: Motivation 101

So now that you've thought about how to get other people motivated, take a second to reflect on what motivates you? How do you get yourself energized to take on new challenges, push yourself to accomplish your goals, etc.?

Think about specific steps you take to help you not only prioritize, but also accomplish the things you set out to do? What gets you pumped to keep going?

Write down your thoughts and email them to slp@odos.wisc.edu or turn them into the SLP office NO LATER than Monday, May 4 at 5 p.m. Please limit responses to one page.

Motivation 101

Hey there campus leaders. We at the Student Leadership Program want to wish you all luck on your upcoming exams, papers and projects.

But, the leadership conundrums never end even during busy times of the semester. So it should come as no surprise that we have another student who needs some advice on how to motivate her student organization members. So, let's get to it. Remember to post at least twice throughout the week and complete the Leadership Challenge (to be posted on Friday, May 1) and turn in your write up by Monday, May 4 at 5 p.m. As always, send any questions to slp@odos.wisc.edu

"I am a very active member in a large student organization on campus. We always come up with stellar ideas and exciting event opportunities, but no one ever volunteers to help out. It always comes down to the same 5 people who have to do all the work.

"I am wondering how to encourage active participation among our members. Everyone is in the organization by choice so I don't understand why they don't want to participate more. Any ideas or advice?"

Leadership Challenge: Prioritizin'

So now that you've given some thought on the importance of prioritizing in a leadership role, think about how you prioritize different aspects of your life.

Do you prioritize how you handle school differently from family and friend responsibilities?

What is your number one priority right now? Why do you think that is so?

What are your top five priorities right now? What makes those responsibilities part of your top five? Do you envision those top five priorities to change in the next few months or years?

Finally, how do you make sure you stay on top of your priorities? What kinds of practices or thought processes do you use to make sure you are always working on your top five priorities?

Welcome to another Leadership Blog Event! Let's get right to it and see if we can't help our peers with another leadership conundrum.

"It's that time of year when everything starts to get crazy. I am a leader in a student organization on campus and am having an incredibly difficult time managing all my responsibilities on top of school and having a personal/social life. I'm finding it especially hard having to work on transition and making sure the new leaders in my organization are able to hit the ground running next year.

I was hoping some other leaders on campus might be able to help me prioritize and offer some advice as to how to successfully transition a student organization from year to year. Thanks!"

Leadership Challenge: The Next Step

Alright, so now that you have thought about the leadership areas that you have already worked on, where do you hope to go from here? What do you want to accomplish next?

Take a few moments and imagine yourself exactly one year from now. Where do you hope to be? What leadership roles do you hope to be in? What do you hope to have conquered? Be as specific as you can in your thoughts and ideas.

Write down your responses to these questions and turn them in to the SLP office by Wednesday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m. Please limit your responses to 1 page (remember, completion of the Leadership Challenge in addition to your posted comments counts toward 1 Leadership Event for membership).

Reflect on your Leadership...

Welcome to the first Leadership Blog Event of the semester!

If you are participating with UW-Madison's Student Leadership Program, you can get credit for one SLP Leadership Event which goes toward your 5 Leadership Event requirements. In order to receive credit you need to:

comment to the blog at least twice during the week (ends Friday, March 13)
complete the Leadership Challenge write up and turn into the SLP office by Wednesday, March 25 at 5:30 p.m. (Leadership Challenge write up will be posted to the blog on Friday, March 13)

This week we will be reflecting on our leadership development. Take some time to think about the different leadership opportunities, events, conferences, etc. you have participated in during the last year. How have they affected your leadership skills or leadership competencies? Is there any one activity that you especially remember? Why or why not? How has participating in these experiences improved your leadership skills? How do you plan to use those improved skills in your future leadership endeavors?

If you are participating for credit through the University of Wisconsin's Student Leadership Program, the requirements are as follows:

post at least 2 comments to the blog throughout the week
complete the leadership challenge write up and return to the SLP office by the deadline

My student org is having a hard time communicating the importance of leaving a positive legacy. Some of our student leaders do not understand that they leave a big impression on newer members.

How can I get my older members to understand the importance of being a good leader and role model? Even more, how can I get those members to move beyond understanding and actually “act” like better role models?

Communicating in Groups: Leadership Challenge

Hey guys, below is the Leadership Challenge for this week:

Take a second to think about what you like in communicators. What techniques or communication styles do you think are most effective?

Write down what you think every public speaker should do to be effective in delivering their message. Write down at least 5 suggestions.

Then, at your next lecture, speaker series or group meeting, evaluate the speaker using the criteria you wrote down. How do they measure up? Do they make you think of more techniques or practices that speakers should do to effectively communicate? What does the speaker do well? What does the speaker need to work on?

Limit your response to one page and turn in to the SLP office in the Student Organization Office in the Red Gym (room 239) by Friday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m.

Leadership Topic: Communicating in Groups

Welcome to hopefully the first of many SLP leadership discussions! As leaders, we run into lots of challenges and difficult situations. So we want to start the discussion and post students' troubling challenges and get your feedback!

SLP will monitor the discussion throughout week and on Friday, we will post a "Leadership Challenge" where you will have the opportunity to go out and practice some of the leadership skills discussed during the week. SLP members can turn in a short write up to the SLP office and get credit for 1 event. This week's write up challenge will be posted on Friday, November 14 and will be due to the SLP office no later than Friday, Nov. 21 at 5 p.m. Remember, you have to post a comment at least TWICE throughout the week AND turn in the write up to get credit for an event.

Any specific questions can be forwarded to slp@odos.wisc.edu. Otherwise...post a response to help out our first troubled student who is struggling with communication:

“I am in a student organization and as the event chair it is my responsibility to update membership on general happenings that are going on in our organization. The problem is I get really nervous when I have to speak in front of a group.

Does anyone have any advice, techniques or steps I can take to try and improve my speaking skills?

The hardest part for me is feeling confident and authoritative in group settings (both small and larger groups). I feel like everyone is staring at me thinking, ‘who is this guy and why should I listen to him.’”
